aerobis Kinetic Trainer: Using the flywheel build more muscle
The dual flywheel technology (hereafter referred to as “Flywheel”) allows targeted Eccentric Strength Training wherever you want. The flywheel challenges your muscles in a completely new way. Your benefits: optimal training for muscle growth, significantly more strength and a shorter recovery time after injuries.
What does eccentric strength training do to your muscles?
Strength training is not all the same. Depending on the type of stress, our muscles react differently. In classic dumbbell exercises, for example, you perform concentric and eccentric movements in equal measure. You work concentrically when you overcome resistance, i.e. lift the dumbbell. This causes the muscle to contract. This phase usually does not last very long. Once the resistance is overcome, the load decreases. When you lower the dumbbell in a controlled manner, this is an eccentric movement and the muscle stretches again. When performed consciously, this phase of the workout lasts longer than the concentric phase. Many people work but exactly at this point sloppy and give away so enormously much potential in terms of muscle building. Because:
In the eccentric phase, small micro tears develop in the muscle. Perceptible as muscle soreness. These cracks must be repaired. And through this repair, the muscles become stronger than before, the muscle buildup is much faster. The principle is called “supercompensation”. It also takes effect during concentric training, but during eccentric movement, there are significantly more microtears.
The advantages of eccentric training at a glance:
- Faster muscle development
- Significant increase in muscle strength (maximum strength can be increased by up to 10% in just a few weeks)
- Improvement of the rapid strength
- Strengthening of tendons, joints and connective tissue
- Shortening the rehabilitation period after injury
Flywheel training: two phases for success
Kinetic Trainer from aerobis delivers exactly what you’re looking for. Effective, concentric training to build your muscles quickly and sustainably. In doing so, it makes use of the yo-yo effect. There are two phases to the workout. You may have already guessed: A concentric and an eccentric part.
The concentric phase: The heart of Kinetic Trainer is the flywheel. This is set in motion by pulling hard on a strap. When the strap is completely unwound, the flywheel automatically pulls it back again. Just like a yo-yo.
The eccentric phase: Exactly at this point, the concentric phase transitions into the eccentric phase. Indeed, the goal is to bring the flywheel to a standstill by muscular counter-pressure. To achieve this, maximum effort is required. The training stimulus for your muscles is enormous. Once you have successfully slowed down the flywheel, the movement starts again.
The great advantage of the aerobis Kinetic Trainer: You determine the intensity of the exercise yourself. The faster you unwind the band, the higher the resistance needed to stop it again.
Kinetic Trainer is not an awkward hulk of a machine that can only be used stationary. Weighing only 5 kilograms, the workout wonder is easy to transport and can be used in almost any location. The integrated combi suspension in the set guarantees a trouble-free installation on walls, pillars, trees or fitness rigs.

- Increase the resistance: By default, two 4 millimeter thick swing plates are mounted in the aerobis Kinetic Trainer (weight: 2.8 kg). If you want to increase the training resistance, you can replace them with 8 millimeter thick plates with just a few simple steps (weight: 5.2 kg). Both plates are 25 cm in diameter.
- Keep track: The optionally available powrlink Fitness strength sensor wirelessly transmits the most important data to your smartphone or tablet during the workout.
- Flexible generation of resistance:
4mm is 0,012 kgm2 // 1 disc of 4 mm
8mm is 0,023 kgm2 // 1 disc of 8 or 2×4 mm
12mm is 0,035 kgm2 // 4 +8 mm disc
16mm is 0,046 kgm2 // 2×8 mm

Ingo –
Kinetic-Trainer is an interesting training tool. To be honest, I had to get used to it a bit. The load on the muscles is already significantly different than with dumbbell or resistance band training. This is of course already clearly emphasized in the article description. In fact, the muscle soreness after such a workout is considerable. I found the jerky switchover when you reach the end of the rope while unwinding and the rope rolls up again, quite annoying at first. It took me a while to figure out how to do this ” switchover” in a reasonably smooth way. When I asked Elmar Schumacher (CEO of aerobis) about it, he recommended using the PowerSpring of the aeroSling. Indeed, the spring makes switching much smoother. I can pass this recommendation on. I also have the “harness” which you can then use to do squats, as well as the heavier 8mm weight plates. However, you only need the latter if you are extremely strong. Or maybe when using them for squats and deadlifts. But for normal upper body use, the standard 4mm weight plates are perfectly adequate. You must not forget that you decide yourself how high the load is, because the pulling force that you generate ultimately determines the force with which the return movement takes place. On the other hand, the combination of 4 and 8 discs also allows you to set intermediate loads, which can then be interesting again. Honestly, however, I must admit that I do not use Kinetic-Trainer as often as, for example, the revvll or especially the aeroSling. I use Kinetic-Trainer more for core exercises and rotational movements. Where it is actually very valuable is in combination with unstable surfaces. Standing with one leg on a wobble board or an air cushion and then rotating Kinetic-Trainer lateral is a real challenge for the deep muscles and balance, as the jerky “changeover” (here it actually makes sense!) makes the exercise extremely demanding. Even kneeling on unstable surfaces or sitting on the exercise ball to operate Kinetic-Trainer is highly effective. Unlike the revvll, where the “Wall Rail” is a useful addition, the “Wall Rail” seems to come highly recommended with Kinetic-Trainer. When Kinetic-Trainer came out, the adapter for the “Wall Rail” was not yet available. I had currently had other stainless steel suspensions made for me by a locksmith, which I had attached to the wall at different heights and even once to the ceiling, in order to be able to adjust the height of Kinetic-Trainer depending on the exercise requirements. I quite quickly had the impression that only the pull from below was not enough. A little later, the new version of the “Wall Rail” came out with the adapter for Kinetic-Trainer. This is definitely a useful addition if you decide to use Kinetic-Trainer!
Kinetic-Trainer is already quite expensive – there is no way around it. Personally, it seems slightly overpriced to me, even compared to the revvll-PRO, which still has a high-tech inner workings, considering that it’s ultimately just a fixed rotating axle with a webbing wrapped around it. But the components, as you would expect from aerobis, are of extremely high quality and grade. Kinetic-Trainer will last a lifetime if used properly. You might have to replace the webbing in the meantime, but the belt guidance is already so good that this will very rarely be the case. That is quite different with the competition (eg Exxentric). There, the webbing is already slightly damaged after a few uses. The fact that you can buy the webbing from Exxentric as a spare part by the meter actually says it all. If you now also consider that Kinetic-Trainer is mobile and the competitor products are even more expensive (in some cases even by a multiple), then maybe the price is right again. If you save up for a while, then it doesn’t hurt quite as much. Every now and then you can find offers in the classifieds – but that’s rather rarely the case, which by the way speaks for the quality of the device: Whoever has it obviously doesn’t want to sell it again so quickly. If you’re interested in functional and athletic training, or just want to take your proprioceptive training to a new level, I can definitely recommend this fine piece.
